I would like to talk to you today about
washing feet. The hour was at hand when
Jesus would be bound and crucified. But
all his disciples could think about was
which of them would be greatest in the
Kingdom of heaven.
How well Jesus knew their hearts. What
would be Christ’s reply? “He that is
greatest, let him be servant of all.” At that
point, he could have directed them to
wash one another’s feet, but which of the
twelve would be willing?
Following the meal, Jesus laid aside his
garments, took up a towel and girded
himself. What looks of amazement as he
filled the basin with water. The hands
that had healed the blind and touched the
lepers, now desired to wash the dusty feet
of Peter. But Peter refused.
Could you imagine Jesus coming into our
presence desiring to minister with such
humility? Overwhelmed by the situation,
Peter cried, “Lord not my feet only, but all
of me!” Jesus knew his need. He knew
Peter needed cleansing of not only his feet
but also his heart. The hem of His
garment touches the dust where we walk.
Who is willing to gird themselves with
His towel? Are you humble enough to
display his love?
He who took upon himself our humanity
now asks His children to express the
same humble expressions of His love by
serving the least of His followers.
Father, not only my feet but also cleanse
my heart today.
Amen.
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. John 13:14-15 KJV
