Welcome Zacchaeus

Everyone thinks of Zacchaeus

As a “wee little man

Who climbed up in a sycamore tree

For the Lord he wanted to see”

But let’s recount the finer account

Jesus was on a journey through Jericho

And like the woman at the well

Jesus had an appointment to tell

The lost had to be sought

And Zacchaeus needed to be found

So He called Zacchaeus out of that tree

Hurry and come down

I need to stay at your house today

Yes Yes Yes stay with me

I accept you joyfully

But this was an unpopular decree

For which the crowd didn’t agree

Zacchaeus you see was a tax collector

Beyond that, he was the chief

The wee little man had become rich

Off the backs of the common man

Transferring the tax to the Roman clan

Any excess he was allowed to keep

A Roman agent, a national traitor to speak

But Zacchaeus greeted the Lord

He repented of what he’d done

His new deeds displayed his faith

Half of his wealth went to the poor

The other half was used to right his wrongs

Four times over from what he’d done

Jesus used the moment to teach

That all are within reach

None is too lost to be sought

Who is it necessary to reach?

Zacchaeus now stands tall

In the family of God

And is not so wee after all

Welcome Zacchaeus

“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:9-10 CSB

Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Matthew 3:8-10 CSB
