Have you ever wanted to be free
as a bird? Have you wished you had
wings and could fly away from all your
troubles? David, the Psalmist, did.
He was a good man but engulfed in
great trouble. It all seemed more than
he could bear. And then one day he
cried, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
For then I would fly away and be at
rest.” His despair had gained the upper
hand. He had thought that his only
solution was to get away from it all.
How easy is it for us to identify with King
David! The same emotions overwhelm
us, and we look for a way out. The ebbing
tide of life breaks us and makes us weep
often. Sometimes the horizons of life
are flat mucky shores. You are not alone
in your feelings. Jesus said, “You will not
experience anything that is not common to
man.” Changing locations will not solve
your problems. Peace and rest will not
come from our surroundings. The problems
are inside us. Victory will not come on the
heels of escape but on the wings of prevailing
prayer. Later the Psalmist could say, “Cast all
your burdens upon the Lord.”
He shall sustain you. Jesus knows how
weary and discouraged we get. That is
why he said, “Come unto me all you that
labor and are heavy laden, and I will
give you rest.”
Father, teach us to rest in you today.
Amen.
No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father.
